THE National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of Tanzanian football after officially presenting the 2025/26 NBC Championship trophy to Geita Gold FC, whose impressive campaign earned them promotion to the NBC Premier League.
The Geita-based side clinched the title after finishing top of the table with 77 points, sealing an immediate return to Tanzania's top-flight league. Kagera Sugar FC also secured promotion after finishing second with 71 points.
The trophy presentation was held at Nyankumbu Stadium on Friday, where Geita Gold crowned their successful season with a 2-0 victory over Big Man FC of Lindi. Hundreds of supporters attended the celebrations alongside football administrators, government officials and other dignitaries.
Speaking during the ceremony, NBC Lake Zone Business Head Mafwimbo Bihemo, representing NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi, said the bank was encouraged by the positive impact of its investment in football.
According to Bihemo, the growing competitiveness of domestic leagues, emergence of young talent and improved quality of the game demonstrate that Tanzanian football is on an upward trajectory.
"We congratulate all clubs that participated in this season's NBC Championship for the high level of competition displayed throughout the campaign," said Bihemo.
"Special congratulations go to Geita Gold FC for winning the title and Kagera Sugar FC for securing promotion to the NBC Premier League. Their achievements reflect the growing strength of football in Tanzania."
NBC has invested more than 32bn/- in sponsoring the NBC Premier League, NBC Championship and Youth League competitions, making it one of the country's leading supporters of sports development.
Bihemo noted that the investment has contributed to stronger club structures, improved league standards and enhanced performances by Tanzania's national teams.
"It is encouraging to see Tanzanian football making significant progress year after year. The pathway from youth football through the NBC Championship to the NBC Premier League is helping raise standards and develop players capable of competing at the highest level," he said.
Beyond league sponsorship, NBC has expanded its support through financial solutions for football stakeholders, including club financing, health insurance packages for players and technical staff, and financial literacy programmes.
Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President Wallace Karia praised NBC's continued commitment to the sport, describing the bank's investment as a key driver of football development in the country.
"Today we are witnessing one of the most competitive NBC Championship seasons in recent years. Clubs are becoming more professional, better organised and increasingly capable of recruiting quality players and preparing effectively for competition," Karia said.
He urged newly promoted clubs Geita Gold FC and Kagera Sugar FC to build on their success by strengthening their squads and investing in infrastructure to remain competitive in the NBC Premier League.
Geita Gold FC captain Yusuph Mhilu dedicated the club's success to supporters, management, the technical bench and sponsors for their unwavering backing throughout the season.
"This achievement belongs to everyone associated with Geita Gold FC. We are grateful for the support we received throughout the campaign," Mhilu said.
"We understand the challenge that awaits us in the NBC Premier League and preparations have already begun to ensure we compete strongly and represent our supporters with pride next season."
